C’est donc vrai, tout arrive. Même à la télévision européenne. Même lorsqu’on l’attend le moins. Cette semaine 1992 la série italienne termine sa course sur OCS et cela a été une expérience puissante pour la critique de TV que je suis. La série nous a emmené dans les coulisses de l’opération « Mains Propres » qui s’est déroulée cette année-là, en Italie. Une vaste campagne anti corruption qui a fait la peau à la vieille politique. Un sujet qui pourrait faire l’objet d’une année entière d’étude sur les bancs d’une fac de science politique. Une année cruciale qui a changé le visage de l’Italie et lancé la carrière de Sylvio Berlusconi. Et nous savons tous ce qui s’est passé ensuite, mais là n’est pas mon sujet.
Alessandro Fabbri, Ludovica Rampoldi, Stefano Sardo, les scénaristes de la série, nous ont offert une écriture précise et généreuse. Non seulement, ils sont parvenus à capturer ce moment d’histoire mais ils ont fait bien plus que cela. Ils nous ont donné des clés pour comprendre un tournant majeur en Europe. Quand le divertissement est devenu la politique ou la politique, le divertissement. Ils l’ont fait avec finesse, sans condescendance et sans jamais oublier que les personnages sont le sang et la chair d’une série.
Le sujet de 1992 n’est ni les bons, ni les méchants. Le sujet de la série, c’est le choix. Nos choix et les raisons pour lesquelles nous les faisons. 1992 met des images sur l’avénement de l’individualisme, la naissance de l’autopromo permanente et son impact sur notre société. Le résultat est formidable. Dans la tradition du travail de David Simon, une tradition dans laquelle raconter des histoires est important pas seulement pour ce qu’elles nous permettent de ressentir mais, surtout, parce qu’elles nous donnent à réfléchir.
Série made in Italy. Intelligente et brillante. Potentiel BFFF : total. À regarder pour aimer, pour pleurer, pour réfléchir.

Waiting can be worthwhile. Good things actually do happen. Even on European TV. Even when you least expect it. 1992, the Italian show, is ending this week in France and, man, this was an incredible experience for the French TV critic that I am. The show walked us through the political events that happened in 1992 in Italy. The operation « Mani Pulite », or « Clean Hands » in english, when judges decided to go after corruption and took down the old political system. A subject that could be taught during an entire year in a public affair degree. A very important year that has changed the face of Italy and started the political career of Silvio Berlusconi. Meaning they went for clean and, well, we all know what happened next. But that’s not my point.
My point is Alessandro Fabbri, Ludovica Rampoldi & Stefano Sardo, the writers of the show, made 10 episodes of pure magic. Not only they have succeed to capture history staying true to the facts but they did way more than that. They gave us the keys to understand a major shift in Europe. When entertainment became politics or the other way around. And the writers did so without ever being patronizing or forgetting that characters are the flesh and blood of a TV show.
In 1992 it’s not about the bad guys and the good guys. It’s about the choices people make. About the reasons they make them. And about understanding the rise of individualism and the birth of self branding and their impact on our society. The result is awesome. Very much in David Simon’s tradition to tell stories that matter not only because they make you feel but above all because they make you think.
Made in Italy TV show. Smart and powerful. BFFF potential : total. To watch to love, to think, to cry.
