5 juin 2015. Le monde va-t-il se mettre à regarder Sense8 ? La dernière-née de Netflix. Une série clairement conçue pour que nous communions tous ensemble et toute la nuit devant notre petit écran. D’où que nous venions. Qui que nous soyons. Blanc ou noir. Fille ou gars. Plutôt Jésus ou plutôt Kant. Mojitos ou Pina Coladas. Bref.
La nouvelle production de Netflix a aussi pour objet sur le genre humain. Même si son point de vue est bien plus sombre. Ça, c’est parce que le géant du streaming connait Aristote, la dramaturgie et croit nous connaître, nous (data). « L’enjeu d’un drama, c’est le conflit, littéralement, bébé ! et les êtres humains adoooooooorent quand tout va mal » (surtout quand cela ne les touche pas et, en ce qui me concerne, tant que personne ne s’approche de mon Nutella). Dans Sense8 huit d’entre nous, venant du monde entier (ah … popularité sans frontières), constatent simultanément que la vie n’est pas facile. En d’autres termes, expérimentent la mondialisation personnellement.
Hum, intéressant. Pas assez. La série devait être sexy (oui, ok, c’est très subjectif). Donc Netflix était fière d’associer le projet aux Wachowskis – Matrix – et à l’auteur de science-fiction J. Michael Straczynski. Énorme. Logique, donc, que l’ensemble ait l’esthétique d’un blockbuster. Et puis … tadaa. Pas grand chose. Je ne fais pas, ici, référence à la lenteur de Sense8. Lent peut être synonyme de chef-d’oeuvre. Ceux d’entre nous qui ne se remettent pas de la fin de Mad Men peuvent aujourd’hui écrire des thèses sur les séries et le rythme.
La faiblesse de Sense8 réside dans les grandes attentes qu’elle suscite et les personnages déjà vus qu’elle met en scène. Des figures ultra stéréotypées. Clichés. Le genre que l’on trouve d’habitude dans les soap operas qui ronronnent l’après-midi. Ça pourrait être Ok. Il arrive que même nous, Français, apprécions un hot-dog acheté dans la rue. Mais jamais quand le vendeur nous affirme que c’est du foie gras.
Pour ceux d’entre vous qui sourient en pensant : la fille qui écrit ce billet est la même fille qui cite de mémoire les paroles de « Heal the world », c’est vrai. Cela admis, et avant d’entamer ma pénitence, je tiens à apporter deux petites précisions. 1. Michael Jackson a eu sa propre intention artistique ce qui n’est pas encore flagrant chez Netflix. 2. Allez écouter la chanson (ici) et essayez de l’oublier ensuite (smiley).

June 5th, 2015. Will the world start to watch Sense8 ? The last Netflix’s newborn. A show clearly designed for us to be together all night long in front of our little screens. From wherever we are. Black or white. Girls or boys. Into Jesus or into Kant. Mojitos or Pina coladas. Whatever.
Netflix’s new series is also all about human race. Even though the point of view is way darker. That’s because the streaming giant knows about Aristotle & storytelling & thinks to know about us (data). Meaning : « Babe, writing is literally all about conflict ! and human beings loooooove when things go bad » (as long as they are not involved and, for me personally, nobody is tasting my Nutella).
So in Sense8 there are 8 of us coming from all around the world (convenient aka worldwide massive appeal) sharing the common experience of life not being easy with their senses. In other words, globalization becoming a personal matter.
Hum, interesting. Not enough. The show had to be sexy (yes, highly subjective matter). So Netflix decided to pair The Wachowskis – yes from Matrix – and the science-fiction writer J. Michael Straczynski. Huge. Not surprisingly the all thing is shot in a blockbuster way. And then … tadaa. Not much. Not even mentioning here the slowness of Sense8. Slow can be masterpiece. Those of us who are still devastated by the end of Mad Men can write a thesis about TV shows and pace. The real weakness of Sense8 is about high expectations and TV as usual characters. Highly stereotyped characters. Clichés characters. As in afternoon’s soap opera characters. Which could be Ok. Even fine. Sometimes even we, French people, enjoy a street hot-dog. But never when it is sold to us as if it was foie gras.
For those of you smiling and thinking, the girl who is writing this post is the same girl still remembering the lyrics of « Heal the world », that’s true. But I have an explanation to that : 1. Obviously, Michael Jackson had his own artistic ambition which is still unclear in the case of Netflix. 2. Go listen to this song (here) and then try to forget it (smiley).
